ABS Celebrates 33 Year Anniversary

ABS Tag & Title Company Photo

33 spins around the sun for any business is quite an accomplishment. When Bruce and Sherry Shields founded ABS on July 1, 1989, the number one song on the radio was ”Baby, Don’t Forget My Number” by Milli Vanilli. Thankfully, time has moved on from those pop music “lip-snyc-ers,” but in those 33 years, good things were happening with our ABS family… growth (coincidentally, the number one song the week after July 1, 1989, was “Good Thing” by the Fine Young Cannibals). By the year 2000, ABS employed eight people. Today, ABS employs 158 people. ABS Chief Operating Officer Ashley Lighty said, “ABS Tag & Title is proud to celebrate 33 years of business. God has blessed ABS Tag & Title and we would like to thank all our loyal employees and customers who have been with us all these years. We are thankful for you all!”

As time marched into the new century, around our 11th anniversary, ABS started the title and registration service segment of the business for all 50 states. This was due in large part to clients asking if we could title and register the cars we were locating for them. A year later, clients asked if, in addition to tag and title services, we could now deliver them too, and that led to the creation of our sister company ATC Driveaway. ABS Vice-President of Operations Jessica Bentley said, “I was hired 22 years ago when there were only seven other employees. ABS was just getting into title and registration services, and I was hired to do research on securing titles for a large financial company. After the project was completed, I moved on to focus on all 50 states. Two years later we expanded our services to include IRP and IFTA.”

As the menu of services for ABS grew, the ABS work family had to follow suit to keep up with demand; from 40 employees in 2004, to 52 in 2011, to 97 in 2016. Bentley said it’s the people who matter the most. “I have seen ABS change a lot over the years, but one very important thing that has not changed are the people. I have been fortunate to work with some amazing people over the years, some for a short time and some for a long time, but the impact they made will last a lifetime. I am thankful to have worked my way up through the company and I feel that gives me an advantage in leading such an amazing team. I know God placed me here 22 years ago and I pray I’m here 22 more years.”

In 2018, a milestone for ABS Tag & Title was achieved, becoming WBENC certified. Being a Women’s Business Enterprise National Council business is a very important distinction for ABS. The WBENC is dedicated to helping women-owned businesses thrive, and since the 2018 certification, ABS once again bumped up their employee number to today’s 158.

On July 1, 2022, ABS Tag & Title celebrated our 33rd year in business, and we couldn’t be happier. Here’s to another 33 years of happy employees and satisfied customers. By the way, the number one song the week BEFORE ABS began in 1989, “Satisfied” by Richard Marx. After 33 years, we say “Buh, Buh, Buh, Buh, Baby…don’t forget our number”! It’s 800-288-6324. We’re ABS Tag & Title, how can we help you?

Two Safety Trends that May Save Your Fleet AND the Lives of Your Drivers

Safety Trends for Fleets & Fleet Drivers

Despite decreased numbers of vehicles on the roads due to lingering effects of a global pandemic, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that traffic deaths were up in 2021! A staggering 42,915 people died in motor vehicle crashes last year. Commercial fleet management companies are taking these statistics very seriously, and several of the fleet safety trends in 2022 reflect that effort.

Dash Cams

There are many factors that contribute to the number of traffic deaths, but most boil down to one fact; drivers are distracted. Talking on the telephone, talking to passengers, watching videos, eating and drinking, even drinking alcohol while driving! Installing dash cams in the cabs and additional cameras outside the rig or automobile is one way to beat the collision odds. These are proving to be an inexpensive way to monitor drivers’ behaviors, encouraging their safety and the safety of others on the road.

Not only is the installation of cameras essential, but the regular review of them is becoming a regular part of drivers’ training. It is quite common for a driver to review a day’s footage and be astonished how distracted he/she is during a drive! Awareness is the first step to change, and cameras are widely becoming accepted as an industry standard.

While the safety of drivers is of utmost importance, fleets also can take a serious hit when out on the road. Although cargo theft declined slightly in 2021, the loss still amounted to over $57 million dollars!  Fifty-five percent of those thefts involved heavy commercial motor vehicles, so special note should be taken if your fleet helps in this transport.

Security Systems

No company can afford the losses of theft. Management companies are finding that the investment of excellent tracking devices and services brings peace of mind and quick recovery, should a theft occur. GPS tracking services allow tracking in real time and notify managers via text or email whenever a truck starts to move. If movement is suspicious, an effective GPS security program can even alert authorities immediately.

In addition to careful tracking, commercial fleets are now incorporating a starter disable function. This technology enables the fleet manager to temporarily disable the starter in a rig and re-enable it when it’s time to move again! With no more fear of theft while sitting at a rest stop or temporarily storing a vehicle, managers can have more control over burglars and ensure that their fleets keep moving on schedule.

Protect Your Vehicle’s Catalytic Converter

The rise in catalytic converter theft.

Between 2019-2020 The National Insurance Crime Bureau reported a 325 percent increase in theft of Catalytic Converters, and numbers have continued to climb.  Because of the metals it contains, this valuable part is one thieves covet, and every car and truck is a target.

If your fleet consists of big rigs, they are also vulnerable and a uniquely hot commodity in this ring of theft.

It is the size of a truck’s catalytic converter that makes it appealing to thieves. And unfortunately, because trucks are raised off the ground, they are unusually susceptible. In just a minute or two, a thief can slip under quickly and remove the bolts that hold the part in place.  The driver never realizes it happened until he hears the painful roar of the engine and is alerted by the “check engine” light.

Because a catalytic converter is valuable, easy to steal, and hard to trace, protective steps need to be taken to guard you from becoming the next victim:

  • Install an anti-theft device. Use a heavy-duty cable or weld the part to the base of your truck with durable steel. Or consider one of the many protective devices available at local auto parts stores (CatStrap and CatClamp are two with excellent reviews). These will slow down a thief tremendously, and time is something no thief can afford.
  • Set an alarm and motion-detection lights. If your vehicle is typically parked for long periods of time, consider installing a camera on your vehicle. Thieves often target parking lots where multiple trucks and/or vehicles are stored, so lighting and alarms are a MUST in these situations. The padlocked gate is simply no match for how well-organized this crime has become.
  • Engrave your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on your catalytic converter, just in case theft ever occurs; the part will be easier to trace and possibly recover. At the very least, authorities will perhaps get an advantage on these criminals and help save fleets substantial losses.

A small investment today may give you the critical peace of mind you need. Protect your fleet and fight the theft that is affecting the critical profits in our industry.

The Importance of Nationwide Out of Stock Vehicle Locating

The need for out of stock vehicle locating services

You’ve closed the deal, guaranteed every detail on a vehicle for your most finicky client, have the invoice printed and ready to go.  That customer will be lifelong and content, but you must have that particular vehicle to him by the end of the week…and it is nowhere to be found. Wait, it’s in someone else’s stock…on the other side of the country.

A lost sale? Perhaps. But most certainly not if you have a trusted Out of Stock Vehicle Locating service.

This service will assure that your customer is satisfied, having made no concessions on what he wants or when he wants it.

Choosing a Vehicle Locating service is essential if you’re going to be able to keep your promises to your customer. Here are a few questions to ask when choosing a service:

What’s the guaranteed turnaround time (Yes, guaranteed. You don’t want to lose a sale because of someone else’s delay!)

What are the limitations of the locating service? Not all services work with EVERY make and model of a vehicle in ALL fifty states. If your service doesn’t have full access to most efficiently meet your needs, find one that does.

Will they simply locate the vehicle or deliver it as well?  It’s one thing to find the vehicle you need; it’s a completely different thing to bring it to you. When quick turnaround is imperative, your locating service needs to be well-staffed and equipped to get your vehicle to you on time.

What’s the ongoing communication once your vehicle is located? A reliable service will maintain communication with you through every step of the process. Your business’s success depends on sales, and your locating service company will understand your need to “hover.”

How about taxes and titling? Crossing state lines in the purchase of a vehicle can always be tricky. In choosing a locating company, it is always an asset to have them complete registration and titling as well.

ABS offers the right answers to all your Out of Stock Vehicle Locating needs. Give us a call or contact us today with these and any other questions you might have. It would be our privilege to help you have success with each and every one of your vehicle locating needs.

Choosing the Service that’s BEST for Locating your Out of Stock Vehicle

Choosing the services that's best for your out of stock vehicle locating needs.

Let someone else handle this time-consuming task for you.

You know down to the square inch exactly what you need in a cargo transport vehicle, only to find that the rig or vehicle you need isn’t in stock anywhere close to your location! The right vehicle locating service will be able to find it for you and deliver it to you when you need!

Here are some essentials that will save you considerable time in locating process:

Their inventory:  When investigating vehicle location services, first make sure yours has a network of dealerships that is large enough to get you exactly what you want. Your first question when researching should be whether the company works within certain states or has a network of dealerships nationwide.

Your needs:  When discussing your vehicle needs with a locating service provider, have a list of the specific criteria that the vehicle must fulfill, and don’t budge from that list. It is the service provider’s job to meet the needs of your company; not the other way around! If they can’t find what you need, move on to the one that can.

The Negotiation:  No one likes to haggle on prices, so don’t! When you’re needing an out-of-stock vehicle, let the locator do the dirty work for you. An effective service will not only find what you need but negotiate price for you! This saves your company endless time and money as you acquire your fleet and get it on the road.

The Team:  You should consider your out-of-stock vehicle service a part of your commercial team. This means you need to be able trust its representatives for quick turnaround, and clear and dependable communication. Inquire with the service whether you will have a specific representative assigned to your fleet and how accessible that person will be.

Having an effective vehicle locating service in place before you have a specific need will ensure that your rigs will be where they need to be at the time they need to be. And we all know that on-time shipments are the key to success in this business!

ABS will not only locate out-of-stock vehicles for your company; it will transport those vehicles for you and provide tag and title services as well. Trust our representatives to meet all the needs of your commercial fleet. (ABS Tag & Title Out of Stock Vehicle Locating)

Make Sure You’re Legal on the Road!

Two necessary documents every driver MUST have with them at all times.

Many people don’t know that a vehicle registration is NOT the same as the title. Here are the basics to understanding the two separate documents you need before you can legally drive your vehicle:

Car Title

The title is a legal document that declares you (or the company / individual you owe) is the legal owner of a vehicle. Once a title is obtained, it is valid in every state, despite the owner’s residence.

To receive a title of a vehicle, an owner must have:

  • Bill of sale
  • Proof of insurance
  • Proof of residency (most DMV offices require two verified bills or official mail
  • Current odometer reading of vehicle
Registration

The registration is a legal document that states you have paid essential taxes and are in the state’s cataloguing system. Each state has individual requirements for this registration, and a vehicle owner must have one that is valid in his state of residence in order to legally operate the vehicle.

Once a vehicle’s title is obtained, a registration is necessary as well. Although states differ on the requirements for this document, each requires the following:

  • Title
  • Current insurance (minimum; higher in some states)
  • Tax or registration fees
  • Vehicle inspection report

Over half of the United States requires emission testing. Emissions, as well as many other safety inspections, vary considerably from state to state. You can find a list of your state’s requirements through the Department of Motor Vehicles, or the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance.

The process of obtaining a title and registration for your vehicle is sometimes complicated and always time-consuming. Entrusting that process to ABS ensures a smooth and carefree transition to getting your entire fleet on the road efficiently and legally!

What is a Toll Management System?

And why would you need one?

For companies with fleets, the need to manage the cost liability of unpaid tolls and violations, as well as increase their fleet driver’s mobility, toll management services may be something to investigate.

There are 6,200+ miles of U.S. tollways, 50+ toll authorities requiring individual account management, and toll coverage and toll device confusion. All of this can impact fleets due to overspending with little visibility of real costs.

Toll management acts kind of like a fuel card. It consolidates all toll spend under one account and there are no prefunding requirements. Fleet owners gain detailed visibility into all tolling activity, while administrative duties are reduced significantly.

When looking for a toll management program, here are some key elements to look for:

  1. Account and payment consolidation
  2. Fine and penalty avoidance
  3. Eliminates payment by mail / web
  4. Transponder device fulfillment direct to drivers
  5. Vehicle Level Reporting
  6. Customer Service with Dispute Resolution

Considerations

Fleet management companies that operate in multiple tolling regions should consider a managed toll system. Why? When you consider your current toll volume, the number of admin hours spent managing tolls, the number of toll accounts, and the operation area of your fleet vehicles, the benefits to the bottom line can be considerable. Even though all-electronic toll roads and cashless lanes have enabled speed and convenience, there is still a lack of interoperability among toll authorities. The result is a complicated and arduous task for fleet companies.

Value Add

Toll management can offer fleet companies real value too. A comprehensive program can provide:

  • New source of revenue from existing fleet customers
  • Valuable program to attract new fleet customers
  • No capital expenditures required
  • Aligns with current selling practice

For the fleet customer and driver the value includes:

  • Consolidation of toll accounts into one centralized, national program
  • Reduction of toll violation risk for covered vehicles
  • Elimination of ballooning costs of late payment penalties
  • Ability to track toll activity and proactively manage toll spend
  • Increase mobility by enabling drivers to use cashless toll lanes and all-electronic toll roads

Tips to Keep You & Your Rig Safe on the Road

Stay safe on the road and rest when you need to.

The best life-saving tip you will receive today…

Pull over.

The numbers are staggering:  100,000 accidents and over 1,500 deaths are cause each year because of drowsy driving!  If you’re sleepy, don’t down the power drinks or grab another smoke…your health and safety are the most important products you deliver to your destination each day!  Consider some of the following instead:

  • Power nap.  It has proven effectiveness!   But be very careful…..longer than 20 minutes and this will backfire quickly.
  • Drink a caffeinated beverage following your nap.  Pounding these constantly will actually make you drowsy, but that quick shot of adrenaline right after a bit of rest will give you an added boost.
  • Pulling over your rig and walking a half mile down the road and back will cause you to lose a little time but quite possibly save a life or two.

Off the clock” guidelines are perhaps even more essential in assuring a safe drive. When you’re not on a driving schedule ensure that you:

  • Stay consistent on your bedtime.  Your body will function much better on the road if you keep a regular routine off the road.
  • Follow a regular calming routine an hour before bed.  (Screen time of any kind is a stimulant.  Cutting out TV and phone/computer scrolling will help!)
  • Avoid heavy foods, alcohol, and nicotine an hour before bedtime.
  • Get six to eight hours of sleep. Your mother said it for years because doctors have been saying it for generations.  This is what it takes for your body to refuel, so take care of it just like you do your rigDon’t drive on empty!

We at ABS not only want you to get there on time; we want you to get there safely.

P.S. Did you know lack of sleep increases your heart rate!  Your heart rate and blood pressure go down at night….they’re supposed to!  So give your heart a rest, and get a good night sleep!  Find out more about heart health here
